THE WEST'S DEMONISATION of Saddam Hussein, when it eventually came, was swift and sure. In the capital cities of Europe and in Washington, the savage cruelties inflicted on the Iraqi people by their despotic president were well recorded over many years but, because it suited them, western governments turned a blind eye to the tyranny of the Iraqi leader. There were deals to be done with the oil-rich Gulf state: arms, cars, state-of-the-art hospitals and other facilities, the crème de la crème of western technology all up for grabs - and Saddam was happy to pay top dollar.
