Article: Michigan Inventors Develop Transgenic Plants

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 11 -- Masomeh B. Sticklen and Shahina B. Magbool, both of East Lansing, Mich., and Bruce E. Dale of Mason, Mich., have developed a transgenic plants with ligninase and cellulase genes from microbes. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "The present invention provides transgenic plants which after harvest degrade the lignin and cellulose therein to fermentable sugars which can further be fermented to ethanol or other products.
