Frederick Douglass Patterson established the United Negro College Fund in 1944. He was also the third president of Tuskegee University and founder of the Tuskegee School of Veterinary Medicine.

Born in Washington, D.C., before his second birthday Patterson had lost both of his parents to tuberculosis. He was raised by various aunts and uncles and eventually settled with his older sister, who taught school in Texas.
