Princeton Professor Searches for a New Explanation for the Black-White Educational Achievement Gap

Angel Harris, a sociologist at Princeton University, believes that traditional theories explaining the racial performance gap on standardized test scores and grade point averages need to be reexamined. He believes different parenting styles and methods between blacks and whites may contribute to the racial gap.

The black-white scoring gap on the SAT college admissions test has remained about the same for the past 30 years. The racial gap in reading and mathematics scores of young school students remains far apart. There continue to be huge gaps between blacks and whites in educational attainment and college graduation rates.
