Grading Controversy Erupts at Historically Black Norfolk State University

A white professor contends that many historically black universities are dumbing down academic standards in order to show progress in increasing the number of black students studying in the sciences. He also asserts that his university has lowered standards to keep federal grant money flowing.

Since 2002 Stephen D. Aird, a white man who holds a Ph.D. in zoology from Colorado State University, has taught chemistry and biology at Norfolk State University, the historically black educational institution in Virginia. Twice he has been denied tenure and each time was rehired with a one-year contract. This past spring his contract was not renewed.
