The resting electrocardiogram has been called by Hurst1 as the "low-tech" method that the clinician should use in combination with medical history and physical examination to decide if a "high-tech" method is required to identify the correct diagnosis. In this issue of the Journal, Dr Soliman2 proposes a modification of the acquisition procedure that has the potential to minimize limb lead reversals. This editorial will put the proposition of Soliman in perspective of different modifications previously made to the conventional electrocardiogram.
