The underlying causes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) are unclear, although the devastated nerve cells and the memory loss that result suggest that the most effective way to combat the disease may be through helping brain cells survive or, even better, replacing cells that have succumbed to the disease.
One novel drug, PBT 2, is designed to impact on the toxic oligomerisation of amyloid-β (Aβ), the key protein that causes functional damage in Alzheimer's disease. The drug has been shown in a recent phase Ua trial to reduce the level of Aβ in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and show an effect on measures of executive function in AD.
