In this study, designed to investigate the ability of cellulose sulfate gel to prevent HIV transmission, a total of 1398 HIV-negative women were enrolled and randomised to receive 6% cellulose sulfate gel or placebo gel, delivered in a 3.5-mL single-use opaque applicator.
