Urbanisation is characterised by urban population growth, increases in the number of urban dwellings, and expansion of urban, suburban and exurban landscapes. The twentieth century witnessed the most rapid urbanisation in human history. The global urban population increased from a mere 13% in 1900 to more than 50% in 2007. The world is therefore becoming an urbanised global village.
