Article: CSB Calls for Tougher Combustible Dust Rules

At a recent Senate subcommittee hear- ing, the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) said OSHA needs a more comprehensieve set of combustible dust regulations. Referring to the Imperial Sugar refinery explosion, which killed 13 workers at the Port Wentworth refinery, CSB believes the incident could have been avoided had there been a single dust standard in place. CSB Chair John Bresland says that existing standards lack clear definitions of what kinds of dusts are hazardous, and only address limited aspects of how to control those hazards.
