The aim of the current movement toward publishing old excavations rather than engaging in new fieldwork is to make primary source information finally available to both scholars and the public. But publishing old excavations also presents significant challenges, such as working with excavation records written by other people-often using pre-modern excavation techniques-and the loss of some information over the intervening time since the fieldwork took place. Moreover, there is the question of how to involve inexperienced students. These are the sorts of problems I faced when bringing the old excavations by the Columbia University Expedition to Phlamoudhi to publication. I share my ...
