Calcium gluconate
A female neonate developed calcinosis cutis following extravasation of calcium gluconate, administered for hypocalcaemia.
On postnatal day 3, a laboratory test revealed the neonate had a serum calcium level of 0.83 mmol/L. She received a loading dose of IV calcium gluconate 255mg in 3ml of distilled water, over 2 days, into the dorsum of the right hand. Some of the dose extravasated, and 4 days after the final dose, physical examination of her right wrist revealed a firm mass with erythema and oedema.
