A Comment on Howard's Authentication Analysis of the Angus Nebraska Fluted Point

Howard (2001) attempts to determine if the Angus "point", reportedly found with a mammoth skeleton in south central Nebraska in 1931, is an authentic artifact or a modern fake. Howard uses the lack of use-wear and post-depositional surface modification of the artifact as his evidence to infer that the artifact is a fake (Howard 2001:325). A reanalysis of the artifact using multiple criteria including historical information regarding flintknapping skill, lithic reduction sequences, microscopic examination and microwear analysis, all indicate that the biface is indeed an authentic prehistoric fluted artifact. Failure to respond to Howard would imply acceptance of a flawed methodology.
