The Smithsonian Institution's National Anthropological Archives and National Museum of the American Indian retain a substantial collection of Plains Indian winter counts. Most are Lakota winter counts collected by or for Garrick Mallery in the late nineteenth century. Winter counts are lists of year names reflecting important or memorable events that served tribal historians as mnemonics for each year's events. These lists were recorded in ...
