WINNIPEG - Federal Justice Minister Rob Nicholson is refusing to call a sweeping public inquiry that would study how to better protect society from high-risk sex offenders in the wake of the high-profile Peter Whitmore case.
In a letter, Nicholson told Whitmore's lawyer last week such a process wouldn't be "productive" because steps have already been taken to address the many legal flaws that allowed Whitmore to continue preying on innocent victims.
Those steps do not, however, include provisions which would prevent even the worst offenders from one day seeking parole.
Dan Brodsky wrote Nicholson and Prime Minister Stephen Harper last summer, saying the Whitmore case had rocked public ...
