Researchers at the Army Research Laboratory, the Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the University of Maryland and the Naval Air Systems Command have demonstrated the ability to align molecules in a thick polymer film. This breakthrough represents the first example of molecular orientation on polymer films approaching one millimeter in thickness, the amount required for a fast laser-protective shutter.
This achievement supports the military goal of creating protection for sensors and eyes from frequency-agile lasers. ...
