The U.S. Navy is testing a new type of degaussing coil installed on a naval vessel in an effort to protect seagoing assets from mines. The new coil is lighter and less expensive to install than traditional systems, and it may simplify individual ship mine protection.
Degaussing is the neutralization of a ship's magnetic field by sending electrical currents through a series of metal cables encircling all or part of a ship. The process aims to combat the threat to Navy vessels posed by undersea magnetic mines, which detonate when large magnetic fields ...
