A key debate on skill mix is due to be take place at the annual professional conference in Harrogate on 20 to 22 November
Skill mix has always been a feature of good health care. In hospitals and communities, war zones and disaster areas, different professionals and other skilled workers have always pooled their knowledge, skills and expertise to greater effect than any one group could achieve alone. The problem for 'skill mix" as a label is that it has become associated with the need to reduce spending on staff and enforced economies of skills, rather than a planned approach to genuinely mixed teams.
