A solitary genius: the establishment of Pärt's technique (1958-68)

USING THE SAME WORDS in which Prokofiev described Scriabin,1 one might say that Part is a 'solitary genius'. He has stepped outside the main current of his time to inhabit his own world of 'tmtinnabuli', a distinctly personal method that informs the main body of his music. But what do we know of the creative genesis of this extraordinary individual? What was the nature of the path he explored in his early, experimental period, that culminated in 1968 with Credo?2
