READING THIS BOOK made my blood run cold. I must have taught L'incoronazione di Poppea, to undergraduates for more than 20 years, and although I was conscious of putting out something of a simplified version of the history of the opera, it was not until I read the first four chapters of Ellen Rosand's study that I realised the extent of the complications in the source material that I had been unwittingly dumbing down.
