Composer of some of the most substantial vernacular narrative poems surviving from the twelfth century, Wace died in the 1170s as a canon of Bayeux cathedral, after a long career as administrator and writer that brought him into (and out of ) the patronage of the gentry and royalty of Normandy and England.
