WOMEN whose marriage ends because their parents cannot meet inflated dowry demands could be awarded damages under the terms of a proposed law.

Dowry is money or gifts given by a bride's parents to a groom's family, a cultural practice common in the sub-continent.

Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma (Lab) has noticed an increase in cases at his weekly constituency surgeries where marriages end within weeks because the groom's family demands an excessive dowry.

Sharma will meet with women's groups to discuss a Parliamentary bill to compensate women who are forced into divorce because of increasing postmarriage dowry demands.
