VFW Pushed for the GI Bill and Much More During WWII

Passage of the most important veterans legislation in history came about because of VFWs role.

The part VFW played in achieving the Gl Bill of Rights, the popular name for the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, was critical to its development and ultimate passage.

Under the leadership of four wartime VFW commanders-in-chief-Max Singer, Robert T. Merrill, Carl J. Schoeninger and Jean A. Brunner-VFW led the battle for the rights of all WWII veterans.

At VFW's 44th National Encampment, as conventions then were called, in 1943, Merrill submitted a 10-point veterans program that went beyond proposals made by President Franklin Roosevelt.
