VA to Open 39 New Vet Centers

VA plans to open 39 new counseling centers for combat veterans during the next year. They will add to VA's existing 232 community-based Vet Centers.

They offer combat vets and their families counseling on employment, family issues and education. For family members of vets killed on active duty, they also provide bereavement counseling. Counseling for vets who were sexually harassed on active duty is available, too.

Services at Vet Centers-established by Congress in 1979 for Vietnam veterans-are free for vets of any era who experienced combat. VA says many of the counselors are combat vets, and the centers recently hired 100 vets of Iraq and Afghanistan.
