Today, VA's National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research in Portland, Ore., is pioneering new ways to prevent and treat hearing loss. Younger war veterans as well as older vets are benefiting, with nearly 850,000 receiving compensation for auditory disabilities.
Harry James Rand visited the Portland VA Medical Center (VAMC) in June to discuss initial problems and possible adjustments with his new digital hearing aid. After more than 40 years of wearing an analog version, he is adapting to new technology.
Rand served as a mechanic with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany from 1951-52. Today, he explains his hearing loss as being deaf in his right ear, and a 60% loss in his left ear. ...
