Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley has gotten approval from the California Department of Health Services and the county to open its emergency room to the public, much to the chagrin of neighboring hospitals, which apparently value the work.

Both Fountain Valley Regional Hospital (an OrNda HealthCorp hospital) and Columbia/Huntington Beach Hospital had contested the application for a license, arguing there was already a surplus of emergency room beds in the area.

"I don't think there is a demonstrated need," said Carol Freeman, CEO of Columbia/Huntington Beach Hospital, which just paid $2 million to expand and upgrade its emergency room.
