Article: Missouri Inventor Develops I-Beam, Curved Flanges

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 17 -- L. William Zahner III of Kansas City, Mo., has developed an I-beam.

According to the abstract released by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "An I-beam comprises a first D-shaped flange and a second D-shaped flange connected by a web. Each flange includes a planar segment and a curved segment. A lip depends from the planar segment of each flange nd is adapted to be attached to the web. The curved segment of each flange includes an outer surface and an outer surface. The outer surface is serrated to grip a wall panel or other structure attached to the flange and the inner surface includes ridges to strengthen the flange."
