Center for Disease Control and Prevention officials say an optimal HIV prevention program for the United States would require an additional $877 million in fiscal year 2009 and an additional $4.8 billion over five years, more than doubling what is currently being spent.
Top CDC officials offered the "professional judgment budget" in testimony before a Sept. 16 hearing of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, chaired by Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif).
"CDC could greatly expand its efforts, increasing coverage and impact, and could provide leadership to an effective U.S. response to the epidemic at home," read the report submitted by CDC Director Julie Gerberding.
