Patients who have HIV disease may be referred to physical therapy for treatment of problems related to, or not related to, HIV disease. In either case, a common intervention implemented by physical therapists is therapeutic exercise. Thus, an understanding of the implications of the HIV disease process on exercise prescription is useful for all physical therapists. In this section we will review the research that has explored the effects of exercise on the immune system, the cardiovascular system, and the musculoskeletal system of individuals with HIV disease.
