In 2008, the construction industry - and Bobcat Co. in particular - marked a major milestone as it celebrated the 50th anniversary of the skid-steer loader. Developed by Cyril and Louis Keller in 1957 as a tool to clean out turkey barns, the original "self-propelled loader" was discovered the following year by Lester Melroe, and before long, the historic partnership between the Keller and Melroe brothers was formed. Over the half century that has followed, the skid steer has gone through many incarnations, transforming from a simple three-wheeled machine powered by pulleys and belts to the high-tech, fourwheeled, diesel-powered, multi-tasker you see today.
