Primary biliary cirrhosis developed in a 39-year-old woman who had been receiving long-term lactobacillus vaccinations for the prevention of recurrent bacterial vaginitis.
The woman presented with a 3-month history of fatigue and generalised severe pruritus that had caused sleep disturbance. She had been receiving IM lactobacillus vaccine [Gynatren; dose not stated] during the previous 8 years, administered twice within several weeks within the first year, and then at 1-year intervals. Tests revealed the following; serum bilirubin (1.3 mg/dL), alkaline phosphatase (363 IU/L), γ-glutamyl transferase (244 IU/L), AST (92 IU/L), ALT (158 IU/L).
