A 33-year-old pregnant woman developed a haematoma and haemorrhagic shock during treatment with heparin anticoagulation. The fetus subsequently died.
The woman was gravida 6, para 3, abortion 2 and had a history of rheumatic fever complicated by mitral stenosis. In November 2004, she was admitted with mental deterioration, impaired vision and consciousness, and right-sided hemiplegia. A left atrial prothrombus formation was revealed by echocardiography and a 23 weeks' unplanned gestation was also found. She was hospitalised and diagnosed with an acute cerebral infarction for which she received heparin [dosage and duration of treatment not stated]. She was later discharged taking warfarin. ...
