If you'd asked me yesterday, I'd have said, "Get Joanna Macgregor on Naxos." Now Steven Osborne has recorded the Britten Piano Concerto for Hyperion, and not just with the original Recitative third movement as an appendix, but with the other Britten works for piano and orchestra too. It's a neat solution for collectors. The recording is good and warm, and Osborne's technique helps put him ahead of the game: this is no average British pianist, so the downside would seem to be just dollars, with the Hyperion selling for around twice the ...
