It was simply a part-time summer job that would get him through college, but once Robert J. Staudinger began working for Eastern Rotorcraft Company (ERC), a Bucks County, Pennsylvania manufacturer of mechanical lifting devices for helicopters, he fell in love - with manufacturing.

The company hired the young college student as an entry-level machinist in 1974, putting him behind engine lathes, turret lathes and other machines. "After my first experience, I knew I wanted to be in manufacturing. I liked making things," he recalls today, sitting in his office at Chatham-based National Manufacturing Co, Inc. (NMC), where he serves as president and CEO.
