Having worked for several years as Vermont representative of the Innisbrook product-sales fundraising company, Amy Barr knew that the North Carolina-based firm was part of a big, though unheralded, business. Five years ago, she decided to go get a piece of it for herself.

Based on discussions with parent-teacher organizations, Barr identified a potentially profitable niche in the form of school fund raisers that sold only products made Vermont. The state's image of wholesomeness, combined with the burgeoning buy-local trend, might serve as the basis for a successful company, she figured.
