In September 2007, Monona Terrace became the first U.S. convention center to become certified as a "green building" at the Silver Level by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEEDEB) program. This certification recognizes Monona Terrace's efforts in promoting a whole-building approach to sustainability in the areas of human and environmental health, sustainable site development, water savings, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality.
