HUNTINGTON - Just before Thanksgiving, the Rahall Transportation Institute at Marshall University demonstrated an advanced, energy-efficient way to generate light.
Although the technology has been around for a while, it has not found a large-scale commercial market.
But that could be about to change.
The railroad industry now is looking at using the light-emitting ceramic technology at crossings and on its rolling stock and the City of Huntington just placed an order for 46 lights that will be embedded into downtown sidewalks, said Richard Begley, professor in the Marshall College of Technology and Engineering and associate director of the Appalachian Transportation Institute.
