Confronting another year of declining sales, several North American truck and engine makers underwent significant changes during 2008 as they prepare for the next round of federal engine emission regulations slated for 2010.

Through November, total Class 8 truck sales totaled 120,726, down 13.1% from a year earlier.

In June, Caterpillar Inc. announced it would end heavy-duty engine production during 2009, citing high development costs needed to produce engines to meet the stricter federal regulations and the shrinking market for its products.

Several months later, Daimler Trucks North America said it would terminate Sterling Trucks, one of its three truck subsidiaries, in March 2009.
