In Hunan Province, Zhuzhou Smelter Group has combined a 100,000-mt/y expansion of zinc production capacity with a signifi- cant reduction of the operation's adverse environmental impacts. Working with teams at Outotec's Research Center and Base Metals division in Finland, Zhuzhou has integrated the Outotec atmospheric zinc concentrate direct leaching process with existing production facilities, including cal- cine leaching, Waelz kiln operation and electrowinning as well as solvent extraction for indium recovery, but has also replaced part of the old production facility.
