EARLY in The Vertical Hour, David Hare, Britain's most committed left-wing playwright, defines politics as the reconciliation of the irreconcilable.
It harkens back to a previous Hare work presented on a Winnipeg stage a few seasons ago, Via Dolorosa, in which he lectured about the beliefs and irreconcilable differences between Jews and Arabs. In his previous plays Skylight and The Blue Room, he dove into the gulf between genders and the infinite ways in which public and private morality bedevil one another.
