'Psychological blow' as helium leak puts Large Hadron Collider out of action for six months

A FAULTY electrical connection between two magnets is the most likely cause of the Large Hadron Collider's shutdown last week. The ?3.6 billion particle accelerator at Cern is out of action until next spring.

Cern said that an "incident" resulted in a large helium leak during commissioning of the final sector of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

Early investigations have indicated a faulty connection between two of the accelerator's magnets.

For investigations to continue, the problem sector has to be brought back to room temperature and the magnets opened up for inspection, a process expected to take ...
