The FreedomWorks issued the following news release:
When states are facing a budget deficit, the fiscally prudent solution is to tighten spending and cut bureaucratic waste before increasing taxes. FreedomWorks opposes increasing taxes, especially in a recession.
Cigarette taxes are historically bad public policy and do not bring the anticipated revenue as smokers either cut back, cross borders, turn to the internet, or even use the black market.
Since this is a declining source of revenue, non-smokers should also oppose cigarette tax hikes because states will have no choice but continue to raise other taxes to make up for the inevitable budget shortfalls.
