Tune into the national newscasts and all you get is the big, bad picture. Companies are going bankrupt, thousands of people are losing their jobs, many places around the world are suffering.

But not here. Not yet.

The standard joke these days in the newsroom is the headline Manitoba bucks the trend. It fits on pretty much everything.

House sales? Up. We had one of our best years ever in 2008.

Retail sales? Up, by almost twice the national average

Automotive sales? Down a bit, but far ahead of the national average.

Employment? The Prairies have the lowest unemployment rates in ...
