Article: Bill Introduced To Prevent Transmission Of Foot And Mouth Disease

The National Association of State Departments of Agriculture issued the following newsletter:

Sens. Tim Johnson (D-SD) and Mike Enzi (R-WY) introduced legislation (S. 337) on January 27 to prevent the importation of livestock from Argentina until USDA can certify that Argentina is free of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). The Foot and Mouth Disease Prevention Act of 2009 is similar to legislation the lawmakers introduced last year.

Johnson and Enzi developed the legislation after hearing from constituents concerned with USDA's plan to allow cattle, sheep and swine and certain livestock product imports from a region within Argentina. Although the region itself is believed to be free of the ...
