Ask any New Jersey property owner what their biggest concern is, and the answer inevitably revolves around oppressive property taxes. No wonder. New Jersey enjoys the dubious distinction of having the highest per capita property taxes in the country. Its taxes are also the second highest in the country as a percentage of income.
Property taxes are a function of the municipalities, of which New Jersey has a whopping 566. Combine those property taxes with other local and state taxes, and New Jersey has a tax burden that currently ranks 50th in the country.
