Freight forwarders faced a number of challenges in 2008, including a Justice Department probe into allegations of price fixing and the diversion of air freight to ocean and ground transportation as record fuel prices pushed rates skyward.
U. S. -based UPS Supply Chain Solutions and Germany's DHL Global Forwarding held their positions at No. 1 and No. 2, based on worldwide revenue. The two firms also struck a deal allowing UPS to provide airlift for DHL in the United States. - Daniel P. Bearth
