Article: Layoffs planned at Winnipeg call centre

A Winnipeg call centre is about to become the latest casualty of the recession and financial crisis.

About 150 employees of CUETS were informed Tuesday that its call centre will close by the end of this year and layoffs will start in the next couple of months.

CUETS (which originally stood for Credit Union Electronic Transaction Services) had been the organization that issued MasterCard credit cards to credit union members and provided backup services.

MBNA Canada Bank, a unit of Bank of America, bought CUETS in 2007.

Cathy Velazquez, a spokeswoman for MBNA in Ottawa, said the company has decided to close the Winnipeg call centre and integrate it into the company's Ottawa operations.
