TOPEKA, Kan., March 20 -- Washburn University issued the following news release:
Three honorary doctorates will be conferred at the Washburn University commencement exercises on Saturday, May 16.
Robert E. Duffens, honorary doctor of commerce
Duffens earned a bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1947, having completed military service in the United States Naval Air Force. He then assumed management of the family business, Duffens Optical, and served as chairman of the company, which was sold in 1996. His invention of the four-headed cylinder machine in 1954, which was purchased by Gerber Coburn, is considered to have revolutionized the optical industry. Duffens, along with his brother, ...
