Article: Wiretap law changes allow police to record traffic stop audio

Gov. Mark S. Schweiker signed changes to Pennsylvania's wiretap law that will allow state and local police to tape-record conversations with motorists they stop.

The legislation, which the General Assembly enacted last month, authorizes law-enforcement officials to take full advantage of equipment they have used in recent years to make silent videotapes of traffic stops.

The officials said the combined audio and video recordings, made by a camera inside the cruiser and a microphone and wireless transmitter worn by the officer, will provide an accurate record that will help convict ...
