Three Aboriginal women stand together, huddled around a portable stereo in a basement room of a Regina library. They listen carefully to the voice of an Elder, whose recordings are meant to help them learn the Native language she is speaking.
The sharing of words, the audio recordings, and simple conversations are the thrust of a new language course taught to those who appreciate the notion that language is strongly linked to the protection of culture.
"It's important, not just because it's good to learn the language but because it's a part of our culture," says Allan Adam, a Dene speaker who works as a consultant and translator across Saskatchewan.
